ESSM Honors Program

The Honors Program in Ecosystem Science and Management (ESSM Honors) offers high-impact learning experiences and individual faculty mentoring for highly motivated students to develop habits and skills of integrative and lifelong learning as future scholars and professionals for the understanding and stewardship of the Earth’s ecosystems. Requirements for ESSM Honors Program

Students completing the ESSM Honors program will meet all program learning outcomes for the respective majors (ECOR, FORS, RENR, RLEM & SPSA) and achieve the top level in the programming learning outcomes related the habits and skills for integrative and lifelong learning.

  1. Have a cumulative GPA of at least a 3.5
  2. Have a GPA of at least a 3.25 in honors courses, no grade lower than a B in all honors courses
  3. Complete the following 18 credit hours of Honors classes (At least 12 hours need to be in ESSM /RENR courses)
    1. 12 to 15 hours of approved ESSM/RENR Honors Courses (See advisor for updated list as there is no guarantee of the semesters offered.)
      • 6 hours of ESSM/RENR Honors courses must be 300/400/600 level
      • 3 to 6 hours of 291, 491 honors research and or 485 honors directed studies  (See advisor if you are interested in honors contracts, ESSM 485: Directed Studies, or ESSM 291, 491: Undergraduate research to satisfy this requirement.)
    2. 3 to 6 hours of honors courses outside of the ESSM Department
      • Recommended courses are ones that satisfy any University Core Curriculum requirement, emphasis area, minor requirement or directed electives

Note: If approved by the University Honors Program Office, a maximum of 6 credit hours from AP/IB examinations and/or honors transfer credit may be used to satisfy the requirements of ESSM Honors 

Each ESSM Honors student is required to have a designated ESSM faculty mentor and meet at least once a semester with the faculty mentor. 

The transfer of Honors credits from another university will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Honors Recognition and Graduation with Honors

All completed Honors courses taken at Texas A&M University are designated as such on the student’s official transcript. After graduation, the transcript will note that the student has achieved the distinction of Ecosystem Science and Management Honors. To graduate with Honors a student must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.5, a 3.25 GPA or higher in Honors courses, and no grade lower than a C in any Honors course.

Admission to the Honors Program in ESSM

Current and potential majors with an overall GPA of 3.5 or higher are eligible for admission. Students are encouraged to consult with the ESSM academic advisor early in their academic career to plan their course of study.

  • ESSM 351 - Geographic Information Systems for Resource Management (2-2) Credit 3.
  • ESSM 416 - Fire Ecology and Natural Resource Management (3-0) Credit 3.
  • ESSM 420 - Ecological Restoration of Wetland and Riparian Systems (2-2) Credit 3.
