ESSM Students Capture 3 of 4 Awards in Ecological Integration Symposium Poster Competition

Undergraduate and graduate research students were awarded three separate awards for best poster presentations at the 10th Annual Ecological Integration Symposium hosted by Texas A&M University. Participants included student researchers from over ten departments at Texas A&M, as well as students from Rice University, University of Texas-Austin, Abilene Christian University, Kansas State University, and Michigan State University. Kelly Hoffman, an undergraduate conducting independent research as part of the recently established course RLEM 491 - Undergraduate Research, was awarded 2nd place among undergraduates for his poster on, "Reintroduction of the Historic Fire Return Interval After Grassland-Savanna Conversion to Juniper Woodland: Long-Term Analysis." Coauthors on the poster include Dr. Charles Taylor, Dirac Twidwell, Nick Garza, Colin Rosser, and Terry Brooks. Carissa Wonkka and Dirac Twidwell were respectively awarded 1st and 2nd place among graduate students for their posters on, "The Effects of Fire and Herbivory on an Endangered Endemic Orchid, Navasota Ladies Tresses (Spiranthes parksii)" and "Ecological and Social Resilience in Post-Fire Dependent Systems: A Preview." Coauthors included Dr. William Rogers and Dirac Twidwell for Carissa's poster and Dr. William Rogers, Dr. Samuel Fuhlendorf, Dr. Charles Taylor, and Dr. Urs Kreuter for Dirac's poster.
