Jaison Sanwald, a 2010 graduate with a degree in Renewable Natural Resources, is currently employed with the National Parks Service working under the Southern Plains Fire Group located at Lake Meredith National Recreation Area. The Southern Plains Fire group is in charge of applying the management of prescribed fire in select parks within the southern region of the United States. Working as a fire effects monitor this job entails collecting data on the kind of species and amount of standing production before and after burns on select plots within each park. Some of the plots that are sampled are control plots and not burned so that the data can be compared to the data collected on the burned plots. The methods that are used to collect data include point-line intercept, clipped plots, Brown's Line, and shrub density. Many of these types of monitoring techniques are taught in classes within the Ecosystem Management curriculum and knowledge of these techniques proven to be beneficial in the real world.
