Staff Forester II

Major/essential duties of job: Forester will disseminate scientific knowledge about the establishment, growing, productivity, vigor and sustainability of forests to agency, consulting, and industry foresters; educate landowners and the public about the science, management, uses, and benefits of forests and natural forest ecosystems; provide silvicultural strategies for a broad range of ownership objectives including those landowner objectives common with small-acreage tracts; and develop prescription, modeling tools and methodologies to increase forest vigor, resiliency, and productivity. The forester will actively participate in the Agency’s fire and emergency response program.
Occasional duties: The forester must perform related duties when required. Forester is encouraged to be involved with local community and professional activities not specifically related to the Texas A&M Forest Service.
Working Conditions: 45% typical office conditions; 45% typical forestry field work; 10% fire and emergency response
Comments: Must have valid Texas driver's license or be able to obtain one within 30 days of employment, with record within Agency standards. Must be able to speak clearly and write proficiently. Must be able to work some overtime/odd hours, with some overnight travel. May be in the field for extended periods of time.

Work experience: A minimal three years of professional field experience in the application of southern forest silviculture. Two years’ experience (may be concurrent) incorporating applied research into educational and outreach tools and conducting data analyses to solve complex problems. Demonstrated skills in organizing, conducting and speaking at educational programs.
Skills required: Proficiency in MS Office required. Excellent communication skills (written and verbal). Ability to perform field inventory procedures. Strong problem solver. Strong project management skills. Detail oriented. Strong analytical skills. Experience in programming, GPS data collection, and statistical software preferred. A portfolio of previous accomplishment and experiences is preferred
Educational qualifications/training required: At a minimum, a Bachelor of Science in Forestry from a SAF-Accredited university. Master's degree in Forestry, Forest Ecology, or closely related course of study from a SAF Accredited program preferred. Applicants must demonstrate a strong academic background in southern silviculture.
