Happy Birthday Boy Scouts of America

100 Years of Scouting

Happy Birthday Boy Scouts of America - 100 Years of Scouting On October 9, 1010, over 22,000 scouts and leaders from the Sam Houston Area Council (SHAC) transformed the 400 acre Texas World Speedway in College Station, Texas.

Two years in the making, event organizers say it took lots of planning to turn the Texas World Speedway into a city. "We've spent nearly two years, over 700 volunteers, planning and putting on this amazing event that has 20,000 scouts and scout leaders participating," said Tom Varnell, president and organizer of Shac Jam.

One of the many activities boy scouts participated in included a Lumber Jack Village. The Forestry Club from the Department of Ecosystem Science and Management at Texas A&M University was asked to help with the event. Students from the club spent the day teaching young boy scouts about traditional forestry practices and letting them partake in fun activities that gave the scouts a glimpse into the heritage of forestry.
