The Society of American Foresters – Texas A&M Chapter

While the 2013-2014 academic year here at Texas A&M University is winding down, the student chapter of the Society of American Forester’s has been busier than ever. This past month we have been very active not only on campus, but throughout the Bryan/College Station community as well.

On April 9, 2014 thirteen members travelled to Athens to participate in the Texas Society of American Foresters state meeting.  Our club was well represented at this meeting, it was the largest attendance of A&M students in recent history.  Our students reported to the State Society the successful year we have had with Footprints 5K and other events around the Nation.  Amanda Brooks, a graduating senior, won the Outstanding Forestry Student from Texas A&M from the State Society at the meeting.  It was a great networking opportunity for the students as well as an educational event.

On April 11, 2014, two of our club members, Nelson Mills and Zachary Anthony delivered a presentation on trees of the world to a third grade class at College Hills Elementary School. The children were very interested in what forestry is and what foresters do.

On April 16, 2014, the forestry club planted a Cedar Elm tree at Napa Flats restaurant. Tom Kenney, Napa Flats owner, is a tree enthusiast, who became acquainted with the Texas A&M Chapter of  Society of American Foresters after he sponsored our annual Footprints 5K run. We are very grateful for Mr. Kenney’s support and for this opportunity. So the next time you are hungry, check out Napa Flats and the beautiful Cedar Elm we planted !

We are also very happy to announce that one of our club members, Matthew Entrekin is now the district student representative for Society of American Foresters! Congratulations to all of the senior graduating and thank you to everyone who has supported the Forestry Club this past year!
